The cost we’re practicing against

Letting technology do the planning can leave fewer chances to hold the route in your own mind. Here, you keep track of what is moving and think one turn ahead.

A quick feel for it

How to guide the pieces

  1. Point the arrows. Tap a junction to rotate it clockwise. Drag in any direction to point it directly. Each pulse follows the arrow when it reaches the junction.
  2. Match the gate. Amber diamonds go to the top gate, mint circles to the middle, violet squares to the bottom. Pulses can cross without crashing.
  3. Keep the chain. Every three clean deliveries increases your multiplier, up to ×5. A wrong gate or spill costs a chance and breaks the chain. A pulse circling for 18 seconds burns out.

The next three arrivals are shown below the board, including which lane they enter from. The traffic speeds up as the run goes on.

Keyboard: Tab to a junction, then use arrow keys to point it. Enter rotates it. Space pauses. R restarts.

The Quiet Cost

Why practice planning the route?

The cost

When AI makes a plan and keeps track of every next step, you can get through the task without doing much of that work yourself. The opportunity to hold a changing situation in mind and anticipate what happens next can disappear from the process.

What you practice

Crossflow puts a changing set of routes in your hands. Watch several moving pieces, anticipate a turn, and adjust when the route stops working. The score rewards deliveries and sustained clean runs.

The research connection

A 2020 study of 50 drivers associated greater GPS use with poorer spatial memory during navigation without GPS. A follow-up with 13 participants found a similar association over time. This was navigation research, not a test of AI work tools or Crossflow.

This game offers practice. It has not been shown to prevent skill loss or improve performance at work.

Take it back to work

Before asking AI to plan your next task, sketch the first three steps yourself and name one dependency that could change them.
